Why Hike Lung Ha Wan?

The Lobster Bay Hike, also known as the Lung Ha Wan Country Trail (龍蝦灣郊遊徑), is a good alternative to High Junk Peak, which is also in Clear Water Bay. While High Junk Peak is a tougher climb and is far more crowded, Lobster Bay is typically less frequented by visitors.

You’ll also get to hike right by the coastline, see some ancient rock carvings, and visit some rocky beaches. There’s a horse riding school and even a little detour to a kite flying area, which is the perfect picnic spot before the big climb.

When you do end up going uphill as you climb Tai Hang Tung, views across the South China Sea open up and you’ll be wowed by distant islands dotting the shimmering blue horizon.

This hike is of medium difficulty and is quite safe, so it is suitable even for beginners looking to get their first taste of outdoor adventuring in Hong Kong.

How to Get to the Lobster Bay Hike Start Point

You can take any of the following buses to the Tai Au Mun (大坳門) bus stop:

  1. The number 91 KMB bus from Diamond Hill MTR Station
  2. The number 16 green minibus from Po Lam MTR Station
  3. The number 103M green minibus from Tseung Kwan O MTR Station

I took the number 91 bus, so the above photos show directions for that specific journey.

If you take the minibuses, you can show the bus driver this so that the driver can alert you when to get off: 大坳門

Quick Lobster Bay Hike Summary

  1. After alighting at Tai Au Mun, walk straight briefly before turning left down Lung Ha Wan Road
  2. Follow Lung Ha Wan Road all the way down until you see a little sign pointing you to the Lung Ha Wan Rock Carvings
  3. Head down the stairs and check out the coastline and rock carvings
  4. Return back to Lung Ha Wan Road and continue forward
  5. There will be a little opening that you can take to head down to a really cool rocky beach on your left
  6. After exploring the beach, return to the road and follow it until you arrive at the Equine Centre
  7. If you want to detour to the Kite Flying Area, go through the white gate with the sign for the Kite Flying Area on it
  8. The route to the Kite Flying Area is marked by a sign pointing to a small set of stairs and a trail that goes into the trees
  9. A short climb later, and you’ll arrive at a large, grassy field that’s great for picnics and…well, flying kites, too
  10. Return back to the Equine Centre and look for the wooden sign (it kind of looks like a pyramid split into three) with Lung Ha Wan Country Trail on it
  11. Keep following the Lung Ha Wan Country Trail signs beyond and begin your ascent up Tai Hang Tung
  12. The climb is steep at times, but quite straightforward. The summit is marked by a black and white trigonometrical station
  13. To descend, take the trail beyond the black and with trigonometrical station all the way down to the Clear Water Bay Country Park
  14. From there, follow Clear Water Bay Road back to Tai Au Mun and get a bus back to the city

Lung Ha Wan Road to the Coast

It took about 30 minutes to reach the coast from where the bus dropped me off (Tai Au Mun).

After turning left at Lung Ha Wan Road, just follow it all the way to the coast and look out for awesome views of High Junk Peak and some posh residences by the water.

When the coastline comes into view, look for the Lung Ha Wan Rock Carvings sign and follow it!

Lung Ha Wan Ancient Rock Carvings

When you see the rock carving sign, make sure to take the stairs just next to it. You'll descend for a very short time before finding two diverging paths.

I would recommend taking the overgrown detour to the coast because of how beautiful it is. Once done, return back up and take the flat path toward the rock carving.

This is just one of many rock carvings scattered throughout various parts of Hong Kong. They are estimated to be over 3,000 years old, making the rock carvings a useful window into Hong Kong's ancient past!

After checking out the rock carving, return back to Lung Ha Wan Road.

Lobster Bay Stony Beach

It's just a 5-minute journey from the rock carving to Lobster Bay Stony Beach. You'll see it as you descend further down Lung Ha Wan Road.

Look for the entrance to the beach near its far end. While the view from the beach is pretty amazing, don't expect it to be idyllic. There is a lot of rubbish that has been washed up on certain parts of the beach.

Still, it was super fun to spend time skimming rocks!

Optional Detour: The Kite Flying Area

The kite flying area is an optional detour, but a worthwhile one. It takes barely 5-minutes to get to from the stony beach.

Once you arrive at the Equestrian Centre, you can opt to visit the kite flying area by following the signs to the large field. Alternatively, you can skip the kite flying area and connect to Tai Leng Tung from here.

Stock up on drinks here if you need and use the bathroom before the big climb!

The Climb Up Tai Leng Tung

Climbing to the summit of Tai Leng Tung takes about 50 minutes at a decent pace. This is by far the toughest section of the hike, so make sure to stock up on drinks at the Equestrian Centre if you need to.

The good thing is that as you climb, you'll be treated to spectacular views that will make all your effort worth it.

Just keep following the trail upward. It's pretty much impossible to get lost during this uphill section.

Summit Views

The black and white trigonometrical station marks the summit at roughly 449 meters tall. You'll be treated to great views on all sides, so savor your hard work and appreciate the wonderful scenery.

Descending to Clear Water Bay Road

The descent to Clear Water Bay Road took me about 20 minutes. There were no slippery or tricky sections, which made it easy to admire the view throughout.

When you do arrive at Clear Water Bay Road, you'll want to follow it back to Tai Au Mun, where you can catch a bus back to the city.

It took just over 15 minutes to reach Tai Au Mun from where the hike ended.

Getting Back

From the bus stop beside the Tai Au Mun roundabout, you can catch the following buses:

  1. The number 91 KMB bus to Diamond Hill MTR Station
  2. The number 16 green minibus to Po Lam MTR Station
  3. The number 103M green minibus to Tseung Kwan O MTR Station
