How to Photograph Hong Kong's Skyscrapers In a Sea of Clouds

Contents

Where Can You Typically Find a Sea of Clouds in Hong Kong?

In Hong Kong, you can typically see a sea of clouds in mountains that are at least 800 meters above sea level, such as:

  • Tai Mo Shan (934 meters): The highest peak in Hong Kong, offering a panoramic view and frequent sea of clouds during winter and spring.
  • Lantau Peak (934 meters): Another popular spot, though less ideal for prolonged stays due to strong winds and limited space.
  • Sunset Peak (869 meters): Known for its scenic views and suitable for camping near the Lantau Mountain Camp.

These conditions are often enhanced by high humidity and stable atmospheric conditions, which are typical during the spring months when fog is also common.

When Can You Encounter a Sea of Clouds in Hong Kong?

If you are lucky, you might catch a glimpse of low-hanging clouds or fog during the winter and spring months (December to April). These conditions are more likely to occur in the early morning or late afternoon when the weather is cooler and more humid.

Victoria Peak: The Most Difficult and Interesting Location to Capture a Sea of Clouds

Seeing a sea of clouds at Victoria Peak is less common compared to other higher mountains in Hong Kong like Tai Mo Shan or Lantau Peak.

I'd highly recommend Lugard Road on Victoria Peak as the best spot to see a sea of clouds in the winter or spring months, though it's not as frequent or pronounced as at higher elevations.

Keep in mind that Victoria Peak is more prone to haze and smog, which can limit visibility, especially on sunny days. Therefore, while it's possible to see some low-hanging clouds, they might not be as dramatic as those observed at higher altitudes.

How to Guarantee Seeing a Sea of Clouds from Victoria Peak

Instead of looking at the weather forecast and just hoping for the best, you can check the Hong Kong Observatory's (HKO) webcams for up-to-date photos from up on Victoria Peak.

The relevant link is here.

The HKO updates this page with photos from Victoria Peak every 5 minutes. This means that you can see if conditions are ripe for some stellar photos of a sea of clouds blanketing the iconic skyline!

How to Get to Victoria Peak

By Bus:

You can take the number 15 bus directly to Victoria Peak (the Peak). The bus route starts from the Star Ferry Pier in Central and passes through Admiralty and Wan Chai before going upwards to the Peak. The views throughout the ride are awesome!

By Peak Tram:

Probably the most iconic way to reach the Peak is via the Peak Tram. You can get it from Admiralty at this location. The tram ascends (or descends) at a super steep angle and is an incredible way to experience Hong Kong's skyscrapers and city vibes.

Details and pricing for the Peak Tram can be found here.

By Hiking:

There are several ways to hike up to the peak. This particular route is my favorite.

By Taxi:

If you feel like you might miss the epic clouds at any moment, grab a cab and get to Victoria Peak as quickly as possible! The Chinese address is: 山頂廣場.

You can show that address to the taxi driver and get there with no fuss.

*Just remember, the best (least crowded) views are from Lugard Road. So after arriving at the Peak, connect to Lugard Road and you'll have a much better chance of capturing unobstructed photos!
